Created from a substantial portion of historic Hill Top, a former farmhouse dating from 1680 and once owned by Arthur Ransome, most famous for his “Swallows and Amazons” series of children’s stories, The Cottage at Hill Top offers awarding-winning 5 Star Gold self-catering holiday accommodation for up to four guests.
Standing in two acres of grounds, including gardens, lawns, paddocks and woodland, Hill Top’s truly breathtaking position within the wonderful Lake District National Park (a World Heritage Site) commands stupendous panoramic views across the exquisite Rusland Valley - from the Coniston Fells to the northwest, around to where the estuary of the River Leven enters Morecambe Bay to the southwest.
In its idyllic rural location, Hill Top is conveniently located just a mile and a half west of the southern tip of Lake Windermere and Newby Bridge, with a good choice of pubs, restaurants and activities within a five minute drive.
The Cottage comprises two sumptuous king-size double bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom. A large open-plan living room is combined with a dining-kitchen and this room has French windows offering far-reaching views.
Outside, guests can relax in the wonderful courtyard garden with its purpose-built barbecue. Then there is the large Pavilion games room with its snooker table, table tennis, darts board, exercise bike … and if that’s too strenuous, there’s the verandah for lazing under when the sun gets too hot - or it decides to rain (it has been known!) Beyond are extensive lawns, ideal for picnicking, sunbathing or games, whilst more adventurous guests might decide to explore our beautiful woodland with its fantastic carpet of bluebells in the springtime.
Our guests are offered exclusive discounts for Brantwood, Holker Hall, the Bluebird Cafe, the Ruskin Museum and the Cascades Spa at the nearby Whitewater Hotel ... as well as the famous pudding range at the Cartmel Village Shop!
